When to Start Watering Your Lawn

How do you know that your lawn needs water? There are two ways. First, take a good look at your lawn and it will speak to you. If you notice that the grass has turned into brown, or if you see some patches, or if you see a dull green color, your grass is under stress and need some water. If taking a look is not enough for you to decide, here’s another way to find out. This is called the “walk test.” Walk into the grass, and if your foot prints don’t pop up or rebound within a few seconds, then you know that your lawn needs water. If the grass do not spring back, it is a sign of dehydration.

So those are the two ways in order to determine when to start watering your lawn. Now let’s discuss a few tips when watering your St. Louis Lawn.

Tips for Watering Your Lawn

Amount of water. First of all, how much water does your lawn need? Your lawn needs between 1 – 1.5” of water a week so the grass can stay healthy and vibrant.  But if you live in an area where the weather is cool even in summer and you get rain a few times a month, then your lawn may only need 1” per week. How do you know how long to water your lawn to achieve the 1-1.5” of water? You can go to your local garden store and get a rain gauge. It is a small container that can measure the amount of water you are putting in your lawn.  If you are using a sprinkler, place the rain gauge on the path of the sprinkler and leave the sprinkler on for about half an hour. Afterwards, read the water output. If you reach ½” of water then you know that your lawn gets enough water. Why only ½”? Because you will not sprinkle the total amount of water that your lawn needs in a week in just one session. You can do ½” during the week and another ½” a couple of days later.

The right time. The best time to water your lawn is between 6 and 10 in the morning, and between 4 and 7 in the evening if you do not have time in the morning. Watering in the hottest hours of the day, which is 11 until 3 in the afternoon, can stress your grass and the water will evaporate quickly.

The soil type. Check your soil type since different soils needs certain amount of water. Clay soil holds water much longer so it will only need ½” to be fully hydrated. Some soils, such as sand-based will take up to an inch.

In order to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant, remember these important tips.

Brown Lawn Care: Reasons For Dying Grass And How To Treat

It is disappointing and disheartening to realize that your lawn is turning brown looking far from the usual healthy green color. Lawns play a significant part in helping to make your yard look more attractive and letting it turn brown can be outright frustrating. Below are the possible causes of grass dying and how to solve this challenge.

Reasons For Dying Grass

There are various reasons that can cause the dying of grass. The following are the possible causes of dying grass.

  1. Drought

Drought is one of the most common reasons for dying grass. This is a great challenge and a major cause of drying grass. Many people do not water their lawns during drought seasons and this is a mistake, as it causes the grass to turn brown in color, thereby diminishing its healthy green look. Grass certainly goes inactive after living two to three weeks without adequate water and most lawns can endure drought for four to six weeks. However, they will turn brown. Similarly, prolonged periods of hot and dry weather may kill the grass.

  1. Improper Mowing

Inappropriate mowing of grass is another reason for dying grass. This may stress the grass and cause it to become dry and brown. The general rule is that the mowing height should not be more than one-third of the height of the grass whenever you are mowing. However, a length of 2 ½ inches is appropriate whereas 3 inches is better during the summer heat. Mowing on a regular basis is recommended.

  1. Improper Watering

It is important to learn the art of watering the lawn properly. Irrigate your lawn well at least once a week or when the grass appears a little wilted while providing approximately an inch of water every time.

  1. Salt Damage

Salt damage could be one of the key reasons your grass is turning brown, especially if the lawn is near a street or sidewalk. The remedy here is basically soaking the brown lawn to help reduce the saline concentration. If the damage is extensive, then you will have to replant the lawn.

  1. Fungus

Periodic brown spots in the lawn could also be associated with fungal infection. If the infection is left for a long time before treatment, it causes the grass to turn brown. Normally, excessively rainy and humid weather may boost fungal outbreaks. Lack of adequate sunlight and bad air circulation could also promote fungal infections in the lawn.

How To Treat Dying Grass

Drying lawn can be a great disappointment and no one would desire this situation to happen in his or her compound. Reviving completely dead lawns due to drought may be difficult, but it is possible to revive dormant lawns within four to six weeks of regular watering. Ensure good watering, appropriate mowing, and proper management of fungal diseases that may attack your lawn. In addition, insects and other pests should also be controlled.

Dead lawns can be discouraging and it is therefore important to be equipped with information on the possible causes of dying lawns and how to manage the problem. Always be on the lookout to handle the problem before it causes more damage.

How to Choose the Right Grass for Your Lawn

When talking about lawn, many people ask how to choose the right grass for their lawn. Thus, we will address this question. There are several factors to keep in mind when choosing the right grass for your lawn. Your location and lifestyle, the water availability, the wear and tear, and maintenance are very important. Hence, will be discussing these in order to help you choose the right grass for your lawn.

Location

Match the grass type to your region. The first thing you must consider when choosing a grass is your location—and that involves the climate. Basically, lawn grasses fall into two categories: warm-season grasses and cool-season grasses. Warm-season types of grass thrive and perform best in hot summer days. They can be found in the southern part of the United States. Some of the most common examples of these are Bermudagrass, Buffalo grass, centipedegrass and St. Augustine grass. Cool-season grasses don’t thrive in summer heat and they prefer moderate and cold winters. They thrive best in northern part of the U.S. Popular grasses for cool-season are Kentucky bluegrass, Perennial ryegrass, Tall fescue and Fine fescue.

Availability of Water

According to one research, every person needs 200 gallons of water per day to water the lawns all over the country. But how will you sustain your lawn if you have a water problem or restrictions in your area? What if there’s a drought? What about the rainfall in your area? These are valid questions every homeowner should consider when choosing the right grass. The answer is choosing a grass that is drought-tolerant. Low water grasses are Buffalo Grass, Blue Grama, St. Augustine Grass, Zoysia Grass, and Fine Fescue. The first two have a lighter green color and are uneven compared to traditional ones.

Wear and Tear

Some grasses do not respond well to wear and tear. Others can endure the foot traffic. Therefore, determine first whether the lawn will be used frequently or rarely. Do you have dogs? Will you play sports on your lawn? Do you have children? In other words, what will be the activities on your lawn? Answering these vital questions can also help you choose the best grass for your lawn.

Lifestyle and Maintenance

Grasses are not created equal. So determining the type of grass you need depends on your lifestyle and maintenance. You can ask yourself: How much of my time and money am I willing to invest on my lawn? What are my lifestyle needs? You may want to choose Buffalo grass and some species of Fine fescues since these grasses are low maintenance. If there is high traffic in your lawn, choose either Kentucky bluegrass, Bermudagrass, Turf Type Tall Fescue, or Perennial Rye Grass. The downside of these grasses is that they are not water-savers. So the trick is to make sure to keep a reasonable size, maybe 1000 square feet or less. When choosing the right grass for your lawn, consider your location and lifestyle, availability of water, foot traffic, and maintenance. If you keep these in mind, you will surely have a good-looking and healthy lawn.

Lawn Watering Guidelines: Best Time to Water Lawns and How

A lawn is an important aspect of your home’s yard. For a home to appear beautiful and attractive, the lawn must be well-kempt and thoroughly maintained. Proper maintenance of your lawn requires regular and adequate watering, as well watered and tended lawns will make your home more appealing and likable. Today, many homeowners consider attractive lawns as an integral part of their homes and, therefore, take the extra mile to invest some resources and time to realize the beauty of a well-kempt yard. Below are lawn watering guidelines, including the best time to water your lawn and how to do it.

When to Water Your Lawn

These should be watered when the grass starts to indicate signs of distress. Normally, when a garden is stressed, it begins to appear wilted, with a bluish color instead of the normal emerald green color. It is important to test the moisture of the soil before watering and this may require a screwdriver or trowel to be inserted into the grass. If the screwdriver does not penetrate easily into the ground, it means that the soil is hard. Note that it is important to confirm that the lawn requires water by conducting a simple test on the soil before doing your irrigation.

Hot and dry weather may cause the grass to appear stressed and wilted, even if the soil is moist. In that case, the grass should be sprinkled with water for about 15 seconds. This activity is not necessarily considered irrigation because it is not meant to water the soil but to only provide enough moisture for the grass to cool.

How To Water Your Lawn

It is quite challenging to know how much water to use for your lawn precisely because the amount of water depends on a number of factors: the type of grass, climate, soil type, and use. In this regard, it is advisable to experiment with the amount of water that may be adequate. For instance, you can apply half an inch of water if your soil is sandy and approximately one inch if your soil is fine-textured or clay-based. It is recommended to improvise and use a rain gauge, which will help you in knowing how much water you have applied. This is important for accuracy so that you don’t overdo it end up spoiling your lawn. The amount of water applied should be able to soak the soil of about 4 to 6 inches in depth.

Always remember to water heavy soil at a slower rate to help prevent flooding. If you conduct this experiment a few number of times, you will have a more accurate idea of the amount of water your lawn requires.

Today, everybody desires to live in a beautiful home and compound. Therefore, many people try to grow grass that will enhance the appearance of their yards. To ensure that the lawn is well-kempt and attractive, it must be watered appropriately. These guidelines could help you achieve a beautiful and attractive lawn.
